Darren T. Kimura

Darren T. Kimura - Founder and Chairman of the Board

Mr. Kimura began his career in the energy industry in 1988 as a project manager for a large Hawaii electrical contracting firm. In 1992 he became an EPA Green Lights Surveryor and in 1994 he founded Energy Industries, at that time called Energy Conservation and Management Hawaii.

Mr. Kimura achieved award winning status as an entrepreneur and has been recognized by Ernst and Young for Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year in 2000, Pacific Business News' inaugural Top Forty under 40, the Small Business Administration's (SBA) Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Hawaii, California, Nevada, Arizona and Guam in 2002, EPA Energy Pioneer of the Year 2005, Technology Leader of the Year 2006, Green Entrepreneur of the Year 2007, received the 2nd Honua clean earth award from the Blue Planet Foundation in 2009 and has been named one of the Top 10 for Today by Hawaii Business Magazine in 2010.

He is a recognized expert in electrical distributed generation systems, traditional energy conservation systems and renewable energy systems and has been a speaker for the US Department of Energy, Hawaiian Electric Company, Maui Electric Company, Hawaii Electric Light Company, the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Guam Energy Office, the Palau Energy Office and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Energy Office. Mr. Kimura is the President and Chairman of the nations largest energy association PLASMA, a co-chairperson for the Hawaii Energy Policy Forum, an Advisor for Hawaiian Electric's Integrated Resource Plan, and the State of Hawaii's Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) energy management committee. He also serves on the State of Hawaii Governor's Council on Innovation, is a co-chairperson for the Capital Formation Committee and is on the board of directors for the Hawaii Strategic Development Corporation the State of Hawaii's venture capital organization and the Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council.

Maurice Kaya

Maurice Kaya - Board of Directors

Mr. Kaya has led a distinguished energy career with CH2M Hill and the Honolulu City Department of Public Works and most recently spent 20 years with the State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT). At DBEDT he served as the Chief Technology Officer and head of the energy program within the Strategic Industries Division. In this role, he administered statewide energy programs, planning and execution of energy policy that included focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy and led efforts that included the development of a model energy code, performance contracting programs and statewide demand side management programs. These efforts resulted in National recognition for Hawaii’s energy code, Million Solar Roofs Partnership, Rebuild America program and numerous other innovations.

The U.S. Energy Secretary appointed Maurice to a two-year term as Chair of the federal State Energy Advisory Board (STEAB). He has served on the boards of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii and the High Technology Development Corporation; and has chaired the Emerging Energy Technologies technical committee, Energy Division, American Society of Civil Engineers.

Mr. Kaya holds both a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Civil Engineering (Environmental) from the University of Hawaii and is a registered professional engineer.


Charlie R. Jones, Jr.

Charlie R. Jones, Jr. - Board of Directors

Mr. Jones is a highly experienced general management consultant with over 40 years experience leading projects and people. In the last 20 years as a Vice President and Partner with Booz Allen Hamilton, Mr. Jones has served clients across the full spectrum of U.S. Government Agencies, with particular focus on the Defense and National Security communities. Prior to his career at Booz Allen Hamilton, Mr. Jones has over 24 years experience as a professional Naval Officer and Intelligence Specialist working successfully at all levels of the intelligence community in Washington, in the field and at sea in operational and combat environments, including command.

At present, Mr. Jones is a Director on the Board of the Naval Intelligence Professionals, and the Hawaii Science and Technology Council. He is a member of the Senior Advisory Council for the Joint Military Intelligence College Foundation and also serves as an active member of the Military Advisory Council of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, the Navy League, and the National Military Intelligence Association.

Mr. Jones has been awarded a BS degree from the University of Utah. Additionally, he is a distinguished graduate of the Defense Intelligence College, Washington, DC (MS equivalent in Strategic Studies/Strategic Intelligence) and a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College, Newport, RI. (including coursework toward an MBA, with emphasis on Finance and Organizational Development).


Hubert Chang

Hubert Chang - President and Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Chang has led a distinguished career in corporate finance beginning his career as a technology banker with Montgomery Securities and Bank of America. He later joined and spent 10 years with Merrill Lynch & Company as a Director of its Clean Energy Investment Banking practice and prior to joining Energy Industries was the Managing Director at America’s Growth Capital – Clean Energy Investment Banking group.

Miles Kubo

Miles Kubo - Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Kubo joined EI in 2004 as its Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara and received his MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining EI, Mr. Kubo served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer with Alakai Mechanical a large Hawaii contractor and most recently as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Hawaii Dental Service the Delta Dental insurance provider in Hawaii.

Today, Mr. Kubo is a key proponent for intelligent energy project financing geared at Chief Financial Officers and is a recognized speaker on the economics of energy projects. He has also published articles on that topic.

Duane Ashimine

Duane Ashimine - Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer

Mr. Ashimine began in the energy industry in 1989 as an energy engineer at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii working on nuclear submarines. He later transitioned to the nation's 15th largest mechanical contractor owned by Japan's Taisei and then joined Hawaiian Electric's Power Corp. as an energy engineer designing building efficient systems domestically and power plants internationally. Mr. Ashimine joined Energy Industries as its Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer in 1998. He has since designed such unique energy systems as a combined Photovoltaic and Thermal Energy Ice Storage facility, numerous CHP Cogeneration systems, Ozone Water Treatment systems, and a Flat Plate Solar Collector with Absorption Chiller system.

Mr. Ashimine has published articles on Variable Frequency Drive technology and efficient Hot Water system designs. He has been recognized as the State of Hawaii's Technology Leader of the Year 2007.

Jay Filer

Jay Filer - Senior Vice President, nLight Division

Prior to joining Energy Industries Mr. Filer was the President of a Northwest General Contracting firm. In 1996 Mr. Filer joined Energy Industries and has served in the capacity of general manager and currently Vice President for Northwest Regional Sales. His specialty experience focuses on the lighting energy efficiency and utility rate evaluation. Mr. Filer has established national energy efficiency programs with large multi-national customers and with numerous utilities across the country.

 


Rochelle Santana

Rochelle Santana - Controller

Ms. Santana brings a strong background of 15 year experience working in the public and non-profit sectors including construction, government contracting, and law as a certified Public Accountant. Throughout Ms. Santana’s employment, her vast experience includes developing a wide range encompassing accounting auditing, budgeting, and corporate management. She is responsible for and oversees the accounting activities for all of Energy Industries.
